Tsunku ♂
Musician, producer, and the creative force behind every Rhythm Heaven game.
Who Is Tsunku?
Tsunku ♂ (born Mitsuo Terada, October 29, 1968) is a Japanese singer, songwriter, and producer, and the former lead of the rock band Sharam Q. He is best known as the primary producer for Morning Musume and other Hello! Project idol acts — work whose singles exceed 37.9 million copies sold, ranking him among the best-selling lyricists in Japan.
Rhythm Heaven began as his idea. In 2004 he pitched Nintendo a rhythm game "that did not rely on visual indicators," and the resulting Rhythm Tengoku (2006) was built with him as composer and supervisor. He has served as the series' producer and composer ever since, co-writing the music with Nintendo composer Masami Yone. His funk, disco, and J-pop sensibility — citing influences like Chic, Kool & the Gang, and Earth, Wind & Fire — gives the series its distinctive sound.
Tsunku is confirmed to return as composer for Rhythm Heaven Groove (Switch, 2026), the series' first new game in over a decade. He worked on the game without his vocal chords while recovering from laryngeal cancer; longtime artist Ko Takeuchi also returns as lead art designer.
