Lockstep

Rhythm minigame from Rhythm Heaven (DS).

Overview

Lockstep is a marching minigame notorious for messing with your sense of the beat — it deliberately flips you between the on-beat and the off-beat. It's one of the most talked-about timing challenges in the series.

How It Works

You step in formation with a crowd, but the game shifts which beat you're supposed to land on, switching between the strong beat and the weak (off) beat. The visuals are intentionally confusing, so the trick is to feel the underlying pulse rather than copy what you see on screen.

How to get a Perfect in Lockstep

Lockstep has a special rule that makes Perfect attempts more forgiving: along with Shoot-'Em-Up and Frog Hop, a too-early or too-late input here is "still regarded as a miss" for your rating but "does not end the Perfect Campaign" — an exception present in no other game. Even so, you want a clean run, and the community's top tip is blunt: it's "easier for me when i close my eyes and focus to the rhythm," because the confusing visuals throw you off more than they help. Earn Superb first, then go for the no-miss clear.

See the Ranks & Perfects guide for the full Perfect Campaign rules.

Tips

  • Close your eyes (or stop watching the screen) and lock onto the audio — players widely report this is the key to Lockstep.
  • Feel the underlying pulse so the on-beat/off-beat switches don't catch you out.
  • Remember the Perfect Campaign exception: a mistimed step is a miss for rating but won't end your campaign run here.
  • Use headphones to keep the beat crystal clear when the visuals get busy.
