Built to Scale

Built to Scale is a series-recurring assembly-line minigame that first appeared in Rhythm Heaven (DS, 2008). On the DS it doubled as the game's opening tutorial and practice stage, teaching the core flick gesture before the rest of the game ramps up.

How it works

You launch widgets between rotating pins/rods in time with the music. On the DS this was driven by the flick gesture — a deliberately developed stylus motion ("we decided to try out a flicking action with the stylus, which became the source for the flick movement we eventually adopted"). The rhythm builds a steady mechanical groove, and your job is to fire each piece on the correct beat so it lands cleanly.

Controls, timing and cues

Because Built to Scale served as the DS tutorial, its rhythm is intentionally readable — which makes it a great Perfect-farming target once you know the song. Lock onto the repeating mechanical pulse and fire on the beat; the danger is rushing the launch early. Earn Superb to unlock Perfect Campaign eligibility, then attempt a no-miss clear. Practice runs appear before the real thing for games that introduce new mechanics, so use that practice to nail the flick timing.

Tips for a Perfect

Small habits that keep a no-miss streak alive.

Ride the steady mechanical pulse — the tempo is even, so trust the metronome in the music.
On touch versions, commit to a clean flick; half-hearted gestures register late.
Use the built-in practice stage to drill the timing before a Perfect attempt.
Don't anticipate too early — launching ahead of the beat is the most common miss here.
